In 2010, the UNESCO inscribed the “gastronomic meal of the French” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, but long before that, the whole world had been interested in gastronomy and winegrowing in the land of Brillat Savarin and Paul Bocuse. That's why, in the world of wine, three French vineyards (Burgundy, Champagne and Saint-Emilion) had already received this distinction between the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. However, the cultivation of vines and wine is not the exclusive preserve of France, and 8 other vineyards around the world have been similarly distinguished. The vineyards of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley (Baden, Germany) and Wachau (Lower Austria) are also included in the scope of our conference. It must be noted that the French are increasingly interested in foreign wines, as evidenced by the growing offer of bottles of wine from elsewhere on the shelves of supermarkets or of wine merchants, and in online sales. Furthermore, in France, wine training courses and tasting for wine lovers are becoming increasingly popular. This is shown, for example, by the growing success of qualifications offered by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, originally based in London but now established in dozens of countries around the world, including France.
This first two-day conference is aimed at professionals and academics in the fields of oenology and viticulture, culture and civilization as well as linguistics, be it in the domains of English studies, German studies or the study of the French language, literature or history.
The two mornings will be devoted to academic papers, while the afternoons will feature workshops led by wine industry professionals of the wine industry — and will include tasting sessions. The aim of this conference is to provide an interdisciplinary perspective on vines and wine as they relate to the history, language and culture of the countries concerned.
Papers may therefore be submitted on the following topics:
- The study of major and minor toponyms and appellation names linked to the world of viticulture and wine;
- The metalanguage of systemic and/or sensory tasting (technolect);
- The lexicon, lexicography and terminology (possibly contrastive) of oenological practices;
- The semiotics of labels and the choice of wine names;
- The various aspects of wine discourse;
- The history of vines and wine in the countries concerned;
- The place of vines and wine in literature and the arts.
These are just a few examples and are by no means exhaustive.
The languages of communication for these meetings will be English, French and German.
